      What the moon looks like to us depends on where it is relative to the Sun and the Earth. If the moon is directly in between the Sun and the Earth then we can’t see it (it’s a new moon). If the Earth is in between the Moon and the Sun then we have a full moon. There’s a handy diagram on this page which shows the other types.
