I didn’t really chose to work with steel to be honest and it has a bit of a boring reputation among materials’ scientists because it’s seen as being a bit old-fashioned. However, when I was looking for a job where I could do good science, Tata Steel was one of the best companies I could find, so I applied and got the job. I wouldn’t describe my work as fun (parachuting, snorkelling and riding roller-coasters are more fun), but I do enjoy my work a lot and I get to work with some amazingly clever, creative and fun people. I also get to play some really cool kit like the synchrotron and the rolling mill and stuff like that.
