At the moment there are 118 known elements, that is elements that either occur naturally (the first 94 elements in the periodic table) or have been synthesised in a laboratory (95-118). When I was at University (around 20 years ago) there were only 107 elements, which means that since then, on average, one new element has been synthesised every two years.
