All in all no, it can be quite a fun job and I love investigating problems, especially when there isn’t a ‘set’ way to approach it!
There are times when you notice the downsides to academia though and think a different route may of been easier, a big one is the lack of job security unless you get a lectureship.
I recall a lecture I had during my PhD that stated only somewhere around 2% of those who start a PhD will end up with a permanent job in academia, with most of those lost in the stage I am at now, a post-doc!
